Carry a sketchbook with you everywhere and draw from life.

Most artists starting out hate to hear this, but that's the best advice I can give. And to prove I practice what I preach, here's some pages from my last sketchbook. Much of it was drawn in the Farmer's Market in Los Angeles, zoos, airports, and anywhere I eat or have to wait for things. Sketching helps me build my memory reserve of faces, clothes, environments... and it made me aware that almost everyone carries a bag of some kind. My book is patched up with packing tape due to repeat attacks by my cat. My other advice: don't leave sketchbooks on the floor.
